Wendy helped me get going on my novel, Headmaster, which I had originally developed as a play. She read my chapters with great sensitivity to language, characters and plot. Wendy is an astute critic but her suggestions are always constructive and practical. She helped me resolve important point of view issues, and provided valuable editing advice. In fact, she is an excellent line by line editor -- and my style improved after working with her. Wendy is honest, but supportive. While she refuses to sacrifice the truth to build up your ego, she also knows how to inspire you to reach your fullest potential.

Wendy really knows her stuff. After she read my sample chapters, chapter outline, and query letter, she sent me her detailed comments only a couple days later. From her comments, I felt I had a much better understanding of how to craft my manuscript. She gave me more direction by suggesting which parts to take out and which parts to explain further. I've worked with other independent editors and sometimes felt like I was imposing on them. Wendy never made me feel like that for even a moment. She's very approachable and her fees are very reasonable. I look forward to working with Wendy again!

Wendy Tokunaga’s manuscript consultation was invaluable. Her critique was insightful and moved my novel in the right direction to make the story come alive for the audience. Wendy made sure that her critique would enhance the spirit of the novel. She immediately saw what needed to be edited, written and or changed in order for the novel to tell its story in the way the writer intended and more importantly in a way that would garner the interest of an agent.

Wendy has been an unfailing source of encouragement and support while I wrote my mystery, “Gone Tomorrow”. She offered valuable insight into the overall direction of the plot and very practical advice as to how this could be achieved. One of her most telling skills is her ability to illustrate exactly how her suggestions can be applied in your text. Illuminating and constructive!
Thanks to her advice, the layout and text of my query letter is also now more arresting and pertinent. She sees the “bones” of the thing – highlighting those aspect of your work that are of particular value and interest.
I would like to add that Wendy and I met at Squaw Valley Writer’s Workshop - she has been generous with her time and friendship ever since - even while working on her many successful projects. To be a good friend, as Andre Maurois has written, is also an art.

Personal Manuscript ConsultingHave you finished your novel or memoir, but want to know if it’s ready to send to an agent? Or have you been sending your manuscript to agents, only to get rejections? My road to publication was a rocky one, resulting in hundreds of rejections on my first four novels.
I received a two-book deal on my fifth novel in 2006, just as I was starting my MFA program. I have learned many things the hard way and I enjoy helping other writers avoid some of these pitfalls.
The number of writers seeking agent representation increases every year and competition is fierce. It is more important than ever that your manuscript be as perfect as possible before sending it to an agent. I can give you valuable feedback on your manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses in regards to characterization, plot, structure, prose style, etc.
I provide this in a comprehensive written report that includes a summary of what works, what needs to be improved, and suggestions on how to strengthen the manuscript. My comments are sensitive, but also practical and to-the-point, enabling you to make progress.
Query Letters I also can help you craft a compelling query letter that will get the attention of an agent.
CoachingIf you are starting a novel or memoir or are perhaps stuck somewhere in the process, I can help by setting a certain number of pages to be sent to me every week. We can talk or email about these pages, and I can give you comments and suggest ideas that will keep you moving forward toward your goal of finishing your project.
Other ServicesDo the services described above not quite fit your needs? Let me know what you are looking for and we may be able to work something out.
Free Initial Consultation & Reading and Feedback Rates I provide a free initial consultation by reading the first five pages of your project and give you immediate professional author feedback to help you get started in the right direction.
Rates: Many of my frequently requested services are offered on a prix fixe basis, so you know the exact cost in advance.
- $45 for reading and feedback on your agent query letter
- $200 for reading and feedback of the first 50 pages (double-spaced) of your novel manuscript
- $700 for a novel manuscript up to 300 pages (double-spaced)
- For all other personalized projects, my rate is $75 per hour. I always give you a clear estimate and work with you to maximize the results within your budget.
